Geology of the South Sydney Basin, New South Wales, AustraliaTwenty students and faculty examined outcrops of rocks deposited in the Sydney basin that are exposed in coastal New South Wales. After successfully defending their lunches from aggressive kangaroos, the participants moved north to Heron Island to examine a modern carbonate reef environment on the southern end of the Great Barrier Reef. Students in UNL Geosciences pay only nominal amounts for the Alumni Advisory Board-subsidized Schramm Course in Economic Geology. The alumni provide support for instruction related to the "business of Geology", allowing us to bring in visiting instructors and to provide field trips that we could not otherwise offer. The Schramm Course is offered as a senior/graduate level course each spring semester. The course content varies each year, so students may take the course as many times as they wish for credit.
The Schramm Course starts out as any normal college-level geology course, with classes held each week, exams, and research projects. The course is enhanced by visiting experts who offer lectures or short courses in their area of expertise.
The ending is not your typical college course, as students take an almost-all-expenses-paid trip to an area that best exemplifies the course content for that semester.
Since its inception, students have travelled to the Bahamas, the Yucatan, the Book Cliffs of Utah, and, most recently, eastern Australia. Prior trips have gone to:
- Sequence Stratigraphy in the Book Cliffs
- Structural Geology of the Jackson, WY Region
- Modern Carbonate Environments in the Turks and Caicos Islands, British West Indies
- Sequence Stratigraphy of the Ferron Formation, Central UT
- Modern River Systems of the Texas Gulf Coast
- Floatplane Overflight of the Mississippi Delta System
- Geology of the Monterey Formation in Coastal California
- Deep water clastic sedimentary rocks of Northern California
- Geology of the Atchafalya Delta, Lousiana
The Department covers transportation and lodging costs for registered students. Students pay only for food and incidentals.
